21-gun salute marks New Year in Cuba

A 21-gun salute at the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress echoed across Havana Bay during the first minutes of Jan. 1. Then there was a fireworks display.
A lot of Cubans I know spent the evening at home. New Year's Eve is traditionally a family affair for most people, they tell me. But others said they wanted to go out, but couldn't because they had no money for a celebration.
