A Texas photographer returns to Cuba

Erich Schlegel, a former colleague of mine at the Dallas Morning News, went home with a striking picture of Raul Castro earlier this month. Shown above, the picture was published in USA Today after Castro's 50th anniversary speech in Santiago de Cuba on Jan. 1.
Erich worked for 20 years at the Morning News before becoming a freelancer. He's been to Cuba before, covering Pope John Paul II's historic meeting with Fidel Castro in 1998, for instance, and he always manages to capture some interesting moments with his camera.
He's based in Austin. He grew up on the U.S.-Mexico border, speaks Spanish and can eat more tacos al pastor than any human I know. A short bio is here.
